> GETTING TO ASSATEAGUE & CHINCOTEAGUE, VA
(From Washington D.C.): Chincoteague, Virginia is about a 3 hour drive. Take U.S. 50 East across the Bay Bridge and south to Salisbury, MD, pick up U.S. 13 South and then Route 175 east to Chincoteague Island. When you get on Chincoteague Island, drive straight to Maddox Blvd., which takes you to Assateague Island.
(From V.A. Beach): From the Bay Bridge Tunnel, stay on U.S. 13 North, then turn right on Route 175 East. When you get on Chincoteague Island, drive straight to Maddox Blvd., which takes you to Assateague Island.
 
> GETTING TO ASSATEAGUE & OCEAN CITY, MD
(From Washington D.C.): From the Bay Bridge, take U.S. 50 East, follow signs for Ocean City. A few miles outside Ocean City, turn right on Route 611 to Assateague Island.
(From V.A. Beach): From the Bay Bridge Tunnel, stay on U.S. 13 North, then take U.S. 113 north towards Snow Hill/Ocean City. Turn Right on MD 376, then turn right on MD 611 to Assateague Island.

Assateague Island National Seashore is located close to Chincoteague Island, Virginia & Ocean City, Maryland. Assateague has over 37 miles of pristine beach. The Virginia / Maryland state line crosses the island almost at the middle. There are two entrances to Assateague Island (one is in Virginia and the other is in Maryland). Please note that vehicles are unable to cross the island from the Maryland side of Assateague to the Virginia side of Assateague or vice versa. Over 300 wild ponies wander the beaches, inland pine forest, and salt marshes. The Natonal Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Refuge and State Park land and water boundaries of Assateague total over 48,000 acres in Maryland and Virginia. Assateague Island is a vital resting and feeding area for a large variety of birds. It is a major tourist destination for bird enthusiasts and beach traveler's from all over the world. Assateague became a National Seashore in 1965.
